   Happy Thanksgiving!

We served approximately 540 lunches on Thursday. It was very special to see parents and family members eating lunch with children at school.  A tremendous thank you to our very busy and talented kitchen ladies, as well as Community National Bank who provided turkeys and volunteers.

There is no school PreK – 12 next week Wednesday, Nov 23 – Friday, November 25, 2016.  Enjoy the holiday!

Teachers are working hard on report cards,  and they will be sent home with children on Friday, December 2, 2016.

’Tis the Season!  Boot Season, that is!

Believe it or not, one of the difficult decisions I have to make every year since I have been in Vermont is when to call it “Boot Season!”  Maybe it’s because I am a flatlander and the weather is unpredictable (I am not a weatherman), but it is also because it can make members of our school community on all fronts unhappy.  It’s especially difficult to declare Boot Season on a sunshiny 50 degree day!  However, we are supposed to get some messy weather Sunday night into Monday and Tuesday.  So, beginning Monday, November 21, I am officially declaring it Boot Season at Derby Elementary.

This means:

When boot season is announced to the children and to parents, children are required to wear boots on the playground. Not only is this for their own safety, but for cleanliness as well. Our playground is large and has sections that stay muddy and underwater for portions of time. Tracking wetness and mud into the building and classrooms and having wet socks and shoes creates a problem for children and staff alike. Outdoor boots stored in the hallways keeps our classrooms dry and clean and is respectful of our custodians. Students need to have a change of footwear for indoors. During the winter, children without outside boots will play on the cement.

K-3 All students in grades K-3 must have snow pants on when they go outside to play on the equipment or on the fields. Those without snowpants will play on the cement.

4-6 – All students in grades 4-6 may play outside in the fields and without snow pants, but must have boots.
