Greetings!  We’ve had such a nice, hot, humid summer week – just in time for fall!

Illness at School:  While the weather has been beautiful, we’ve had some illness making the rounds.  It seems it is starting with gastrointestinal difficulty (fast and furious vomiting), and then ends with cold/upper respiratory symptoms.  Please help prevent the spread of illnesses and help us stay healthy here at school by not sending sick children to school.  Children should not be returning to school until 24 hours has passed since their last vomiting episode.  In addition, children that are feverish should only return after 24 hours of being fever free without medication.  Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Tiger Paw Pride Assembly:  K-6 children will be attending the TPP assembly on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017 at 1:10 pm.

Annual Open House, Book Fair, and Bake Sale:  You’re invited!  Thursday, September 28, 2017 @ 6:00 – 7:15 pm you can visit the teachers, classrooms, book fair and bake sale.

Parent Volunteers Needed!  We need 2-3 parent volunteers to help with our book fair in the gym on Friday, Sept. 29 for any amount of time between 8 – 11am.   If you can help us out for all three hours, or even just one hour, please contact Librarian Kathy Boskind    katherine.boskind@ncsuvt.org

We are almost done with our first full week of school for the school year.  It is great to see how children, staff, and parents are adapting, learning, and making Derby Elementary a great place to be!

Annual Open House and Book Fair:  You’re invited to our annual Open House and Book Fair on Thursday, September 28, 2017 from 6:00 – 7:15pm.  Come and meet your child’s teachers, see your child’s classroom and desk, and peruse our book fair!

Volunteers Needed!  There is a Farm to School meeting Monday, September 18, 2017 at 3:15 pm in the library.  We are looking for parents to join our team!  If you are interested, you can just show up.  Attached is more information.  Feel free to contact Assistant Principal Sherrie Gentry for any questions!                 sherrie.gentry@ncsuvt.org

Parent Drop Off and Pick Up:  We are all getting the hang of it and settling in to our routines!  On behalf of our children, I thank you for following our processes!  “Hug and Go” is going well, as well as afternoon check in and pick up in the gym.  Our children are safe and learning – thanks for your continued cooperation!

Bus Safety:  Last week we spent quite a bit of time reviewing bus safety with the children.  Please help us!  Please be sure to instruct your child to wait for the driver’s signal before your child crosses the road to board the bus.

Free Fruits and Vegetables Program:  Through this free program, we are encouraging your child to try fruits and vegetables they have never had.  Every day, a free fruit or vegetable snack is delivered to the classroom for your children to try.  Your children have had the opportunity to try limes, bell peppers, star fruit, tri-colored beans and carrots, black mission figs, and prickly pears (cactus fruit).  Be sure to ask them about their likes and dislikes!

Family Opportunity: Planning a trip to the ECHO Center in Burlington with your family? Our school library has a pass to the ECHO center that reduces admission to $7 per person for up to 4 guests.  Regular admission is $11.50 for children and $14.50 for adults.  If you’d like to borrow the pass for your family to use, please contact our librarian, Mrs. Boskind, at katherine.boskind@ncsuvt.org, or send your child to the library to ask for it.  The loan period for the pass is 2 weeks.

Family Opportunity: Information about the local Bike Rodeo is attached.

It’s been a rainy week, which has resulted in indoor recess for much of the time.  We were so happy to be outside yesterday, and hope for the same today.

Family Movie Night:  All families are welcome to attend tomorrow at 6:30 pm.  Due to the wet weather, the movie will be inside in our gym.  Bring a blanket for the middle of the floor, or chairs for sideline seats.  If you haven’t RSVPd, it’s okay, just come!  We do need volunteers - For more information, contact PTA President Mindy Henderson    melinda.henderson@ncsuvt.org

Picture Day:  Tuesday, Sept. 12 is Picture Day for K-6 children.  Order information was sent home the first day of school, we have extra order packets in the office.

Parent Pick Up:  Thank you, thank you, thank you for being patient with us and following our process to keep children safe!

Parent Drop Off:  We still have some children that are being walked to classrooms by parents.  Please try letting children lead the way, and once you see they can make it on their own, please “Hug and Go” in the lobby.   This type of independence and competence are special gifts we can give our children!

Encore After School Program:  Our fall session starts Sept. 18, and forms are due by Sept. 12 (Tuesday).  The brochure is attached with some fabulous options for our children!

Elks Annual Soccer Shoot:  Saturday, September 16, 1:00 p.m. at NCUJHS.

T-Shirt Tuesday for Texas:  At schools across NCSU, we collected money for Lemm Elementary School in Spring, Texas that was severely damaged by the flood in Texas.  Derby families generously donated $1,510.32.  All schools together collected a total of approximately $6,628.24.  Plus the Newport Rotary donated $1,000.00, bringing the total to over $7,600.00.  THANK YOU!

Enjoy your weekend!

It was has been a great first week of school!  Check out our Facebook page for pictures:      https://www.facebook.com/destigersvt/

We love having your children here and we have been explicitly teaching and reviewing Tiger Paw Pride.  Having good citizens is incredibly important for our community!   Check with your children and see if they know what Tiger Paw Pride is.  Any help you can provide by reinforcing this at home is much appreciated.

Derby Tigers are:

On Task

Always Safe

Please remember we have no school Monday, September 4, it is Labor Day!  We welcome children back to school on Tuesday, September 5, 2017.

Parent Drop Off:  Please remember that drop off is at 8:20 am.  Mr. Joslin is vigilant at the crosswalk from the parking lot, and Mr. AuClair and Ms. Blais are in the lobby at drop off to help children with our routine.  If you need to walk your child into the building, we ask that you “Hug and Go” in the lobby.  We would like children to be as independent as possible (we can help them get to classrooms).  We want teachers to focus on building positive relationships with children before school starts at 8:30 am.   If parents wish to communicate with teachers before school, we ask that you send a note in with your child.  You can also email or voicemail the teachers at any time.

Parent Pick Up:  If parents are picking up after school, our office should be aware of that in advance, regardless of what plan was in place last year.  As you enter the school to pick up your child, we ask that you check in with staff and wait in the gym for your child to arrive once dismissed from class.  We have to keep track of every child that leaves with an adult.  Sometimes this may take some time as staff gets to know you.  Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.

Free Snacks in the Classroom:  Our kitchen is participating in the FREE! USDA Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Snack Program.  Beginning mid morning on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, healthy, free snacks will be delivered daily to classrooms for all children.

T-Shirt Tuesday for Texas:  At schools across NCSU, we are collecting money for a school that was severely damaged by the flood in Texas and all the children will be starting school at an alternate location and they need supplies.  A teacher at that school is from the Northeast Kingdom!  Please send in money on Tuesday to your child’s teachers – it is a one day collection.  Let’s show the generosity that the Derby community is known for!

Participate in PTA:  A PTA meeting will be held Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 7pm in the library to finish planning the Outdoor Family Movie Night.  All parents are welcome to attend!  We need volunteers!  For more information, contact PTA President Mindy Henderson    melinda.henderson@ncsuvt.org

Physical Education Reminder:  Children have PE twice a week now!  Please make sure your children have appropriate footwear for PE.  Sandals and flip flops are not conducive to the type of physical activity necessary in PE class.

Have a great weekend!

I hope you have enjoyed the summer weather and are getting ready to come back to school!

We sent all families a letter in the mail with log in and password information to register children through the Power School Parent Portal, which leads you to Infosnap.  It is important for ALL families to do this, so that we have the most updated information about your child, especially emergency contact information.

We have been working hard in preparation for the return of our children.  Our custodians and technology staff have been very busy!  They have renovated some classrooms (K, 2nd, and 5th grades).  They have installed a new flag pole, new outdoor learning equipment and back up generator for the preK, new wireless clocks throughout the building, a new server, and a battery back up system to keep our internet and phone system up and running during a power failure.  We so appreciate all their hard work!

Teachers have been in during their vacation setting up classrooms. Office staff have been enrolling and registering families new to Derby and preparing all your back to school materials.  We have been hiring new staff, and I am pleased to say we have filled almost every position.  We do need a bus driver if you know of anyone who may be interested.

Check out the September newsletter with all the important dates for the start of the school year.  You can also access our website for updated bus information, a soon to be updated lunch menu, and an up-to-date calendar with all our school events.

More information about Picture Day, student insurance, free lunch, etc. will be sent home with your child in a folder the first day of school.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

Our 6th grade Celebration is tonight at 6:30 pm!

Here are reminders about the Last Day of School, Wednesday, June 21, 2017:

School is in session from 8:30 – 12:30 pm.

We have a very special event in the morning that is for children and teachers only.  We are pleased to carry on the tradition of Step Up Day, during which children meet their new teacher for next year!  It is important to note that this event is for the children and teachers to get to know each other better, and is not for parents to attend.  Thank you for understanding the importance, as teachers begin to build community with their new classes.

We have our final Tiger Paw Pride assembly at 10am.

We have a picnic lunch outside on the playground.  As always, parents are welcome to eat with the children.  Please sign in, and if you choose to take your children early, please sign them out in the office.  The lunch schedule is as follows:

10:50 am  Kindergarten

11:00 am  1st grade

11:10 am  2nd grade

11:20 am  3rd grade

11:30 am  4th grade

11:40 am  5th grade

11:50 am  6th grade

Attached you will find some information from our PTA inviting families to be part of the 4th of July Parade, as well as some other opportunities for the summer.

This summer, stay tuned to your email, snail mail, our Facebook page and our website - come late July/early August, you will begin to hear from the school about next year!

It’s been a busy week!

Some important milestones:  6th graders spent the day at the Jr. High today, getting ready for the transition to 7th grade.   PreK classes have been visiting Derby in preparation for Kindergarten.

We will be taste testing a radish recipe on Friday, and we also have an author visiting to talk about writing, thanks to a generous donation from the Derby Lions Club.

Please remember there is no school on Monday, May 29, due to Memorial Day!

The countdown will begin next week, but our last day of school is June 21.  It will be a half day, and we will be sending information home soon!
