Don’t Forget About our Concert Tomorrow!

Our Holiday Luncheon for Senior Citizens is tomorrow at 12:45 pm.  Our Student Council will be serving.  Some of the children will be performing for our seniors, and this is a great way for us to thank the seniors for their support of our school.  PreK children and Kindergarteners will be attending the performance as audience members, so they can begin to see what school performances look and sound like.

All children in grades 1-6 have a music concert for families tomorrow evening , Wednesday, December 6, 2017!

Want an easy, close parking space?  Follow the arrival instructions!

Children should wear white and black in any combination with a pop of color. (scarf, tie, headband, etc)

Children should arrive 10 minutes before the concert time and report to their classroom, or the class that they will be standing with.*

These are our concert groups:

Special Guidelines for Winter Outdoor Clothing

All children and staff members should come with jackets, hats, mittens, and boots to be comfortable when playing outside and getting fresh air.

It is now BOOT SEASON!  Children are required to wear boots on the playground. Not only is this for their own safety, but for cleanliness as well. Our playground is large and has sections that stay muddy and underwater for portions of time. Tracking wetness and mud into the building and classrooms and having wet socks and shoes creates a problem for children and staff alike. Outdoor boots stored in the hallways keeps our classrooms dry and clean and is respectful of our custodians. Students need to have a change of footwear for indoors. During boot season, children without outside boots will play on the cement only.

Gr. PreK-3 – All students in grades K-3 must have snow pants on when they go outside to play on the equipment or on the fields. Those without snow pants will play on the cement.

Gr. 4-6 – All students in grades 4-6 may play outside in the fields and without snow pants, but must have boots, or they will have to play on the cement.

Indoor Recess Determination

If it is raining or if the temperature is zero degrees or below (with windchill), children will have indoor recess.  This will be announced on the PA prior to recess.  If inclement weather occurs while children are already at outside recess, the adults on duty will bring the children inside.

You’re Invited to Thanksgiving Dinner for Lunch on November 16!  The adult price is $3.60.  We have an altered lunch schedule for most grades in order to handle the crowd:

Greetings!  We’ve had such a nice, hot, humid summer week – just in time for fall!

Illness at School:  While the weather has been beautiful, we’ve had some illness making the rounds.  It seems it is starting with gastrointestinal difficulty (fast and furious vomiting), and then ends with cold/upper respiratory symptoms.  Please help prevent the spread of illnesses and help us stay healthy here at school by not sending sick children to school.  Children should not be returning to school until 24 hours has passed since their last vomiting episode.  In addition, children that are feverish should only return after 24 hours of being fever free without medication.  Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Tiger Paw Pride Assembly:  K-6 children will be attending the TPP assembly on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017 at 1:10 pm.

Annual Open House, Book Fair, and Bake Sale:  You’re invited!  Thursday, September 28, 2017 @ 6:00 – 7:15 pm you can visit the teachers, classrooms, book fair and bake sale.

Parent Volunteers Needed!  We need 2-3 parent volunteers to help with our book fair in the gym on Friday, Sept. 29 for any amount of time between 8 – 11am.   If you can help us out for all three hours, or even just one hour, please contact Librarian Kathy Boskind    katherine.boskind@ncsuvt.org

We are almost done with our first full week of school for the school year.  It is great to see how children, staff, and parents are adapting, learning, and making Derby Elementary a great place to be!

Annual Open House and Book Fair:  You’re invited to our annual Open House and Book Fair on Thursday, September 28, 2017 from 6:00 – 7:15pm.  Come and meet your child’s teachers, see your child’s classroom and desk, and peruse our book fair!

Volunteers Needed!  There is a Farm to School meeting Monday, September 18, 2017 at 3:15 pm in the library.  We are looking for parents to join our team!  If you are interested, you can just show up.  Attached is more information.  Feel free to contact Assistant Principal Sherrie Gentry for any questions!                 sherrie.gentry@ncsuvt.org

Parent Drop Off and Pick Up:  We are all getting the hang of it and settling in to our routines!  On behalf of our children, I thank you for following our processes!  “Hug and Go” is going well, as well as afternoon check in and pick up in the gym.  Our children are safe and learning – thanks for your continued cooperation!

Bus Safety:  Last week we spent quite a bit of time reviewing bus safety with the children.  Please help us!  Please be sure to instruct your child to wait for the driver’s signal before your child crosses the road to board the bus.

Free Fruits and Vegetables Program:  Through this free program, we are encouraging your child to try fruits and vegetables they have never had.  Every day, a free fruit or vegetable snack is delivered to the classroom for your children to try.  Your children have had the opportunity to try limes, bell peppers, star fruit, tri-colored beans and carrots, black mission figs, and prickly pears (cactus fruit).  Be sure to ask them about their likes and dislikes!

Family Opportunity: Planning a trip to the ECHO Center in Burlington with your family? Our school library has a pass to the ECHO center that reduces admission to $7 per person for up to 4 guests.  Regular admission is $11.50 for children and $14.50 for adults.  If you’d like to borrow the pass for your family to use, please contact our librarian, Mrs. Boskind, at katherine.boskind@ncsuvt.org, or send your child to the library to ask for it.  The loan period for the pass is 2 weeks.

Family Opportunity: Information about the local Bike Rodeo is attached.
