TIGER’s “Calm Quest” Visits DES!

This week we welcomed TIGER, the award-winning theater group from Plymouth State College in New Hampshire, for a special performance of “Calm Quest.” TIGER stands for:

T — Talk to someone you trust about your worries
I — Imagine a safe space
G — Gratitude is great
E — Empower yourself through mindfulness
R — Relaxation reward

Through music, movement, and storytelling, the show taught students practical ways to manage big emotions, stay calm, and support one another. Our learners walked away with simple tools they can use every day—at school and at home—to navigate challenges with confidence.

Tiger Spotlight

This week’s spotlight shines on two incredible members of our Tiger Team.

This week we’re shining the spotlight on Dru Earll, special educator

This week we’re shining the spotlight on Ms. Dru, who you might know as one of our special educators but did you know...
  • Her go-to comfort food is cherry ice cream
  • The first concert she ever attended? Tina Turner
  • When she's not teaching, you might find her singing and playing the guitar
  • If teaching hadn’t called her name, she might be a rancher
  • One more fun fact: She once revived an unconscious, hypothermic baby chick with a hair dryer and CPR, then carried it under her shirt all day at work.
We're excited for the positive energy and care she brings to her classroom everyday!

This week we’re celebrating Chris Vachon, 6th grade teacher

This week we’re shining the spotlight on Mr. Vachon who you might know as one of our 6th grade teachers but did you know…
  • If he could only eat one food forever, it would be cheeseburgers
  • Right now he's into: Well...That's Interesting (podcast)
  • A hidden talent you might not guess? He can make balloon animals
  • If he wasn't working at DES, you’d probably find him working as a researcher
  • Something that brightens his day: His morning cup of coffee
  • And a fun fact about him? He used to be a Globally Ranked Dart player
We’re lucky to have him supporting our Tigers with this essential role!

ROAR Reminder

Safe Spaces Build Brave Learners
At school, we work hard to create environments where students feel comfortable taking risks, making mistakes, and trying again. When children feel safe and supported, they’re able to show up as curious, confident learners.

How Families Can Help at Home:
A quick “Safety Scan” can make routines smoother for kids —
  • Is the walkway clear?
  • Are materials where they belong?
  • Are emotions calm before moving on to the next activity?
These small habits help children feel grounded and ready to learn anywhere.

A Favorite Tiger Quote:
“When students feel safe, they show up as their best selves: Ready to learn, grow, and ROAR!”

Tigertastic Tips

Easy Questions to Get Kids Talking About Their Day
Kids don’t always spill the details of their day on command. Try weaving in simple, playful prompts during calm moments—like in the car, at the dinner table, or while winding down for bed. Gentle questions open the door for honest conversations.
Small prompts. Big connections. ROAR on.
