From “Sportsball” to Teamwork
I’ll be honest, I don’t really follow sportsball. Luckily, Mr. Bonneau more than makes up for it with his love of football and the Cowboys ...now that's a true lesson in loyalty, because sticking with your team through wins and (mostly) losses says a lot about commitment!
With the Super Bowl this weekend (whether you watch for the game, the commercials, the halftime show, or just the snacks), it’s a great reminder that sports teach kids so much more than scores. Being part of a team means working toward a common goal, playing different roles, encouraging one another, and learning how to handle both victories and loses.
Here are a few easy ways to practice “team skills” at home:
- Create a family team goal: cook together, clean a space, plan a game night
- Talk about roles: leader, helper, encourager, and switch them up
- Notice effort and perseverance, not just winning
- Practice encouraging words like “Nice try!” or “Good teamwork!”
- Play a cooperative game or backyard challenge where everyone works together
- Reflect together: How did we help each other? What went well?
- Talk about big feelings and bouncing back when things don’t go your way
Teamwork isn’t just for the field — our Tigers practice it everywhere!
