Run, Tigers, Run...the sequel!

The Cornfield Mile has been rescheduled for Thursday, October 8. We’re hoping Mother Nature cooperates this time! Thanks for your flexibility, and we can’t wait to get out there and run, walk, cheer, and enjoy one of our favorite Derby traditions.

The ROAR Report

Reading + ROAR = A Pretty Great Combination
October is a perfect time to cozy up with a good book! Reading together doesn’t have to mean sitting down for 20 minutes with a chapter book. Read a recipe, a comic, a magazine, a picture book, the back of a cereal box… it all counts.

And while you’re reading, look for opportunities to practice those Derby ROAR skills, too: Respect, On Task, Always Safe, and Responsible. Ask your child what a character did that showed responsibility, kindness, courage, or good decision-making. Sometimes the best reading conversations happen when you’re not asking, “What was the main idea?”

The Takeaway

Options-Based Drills: A Family Conversation
You’ll find a letter about our options-based drill included with this newsletter. While we practice these procedures at school, we know that families may have questions or want to talk about them at home. There’s no need to make the conversation scary or overly detailed.
A few simple questions can help:
  • “What would you do if you needed to get somewhere safe?”
  •  “Who are some adults you can go to for help?”
Our goal is for students to understand that adults have plans to help keep them safe and that, in an emergency, they should listen carefully, stay calm, and follow directions.
